TALKIN’ TEXAS: Annual Stamford rodeo started during Depression

In 1929 some businessmen in Stamford wanted to get their town out of the Depression doldrums and were trying to find something to do to pick up the spirits of the people who lived there. They decided on a rodeo. Ninety-eight cowboys participated in that first rodeo. They competed in four events: calf roping, wild cow milking, steer riding and bronc riding.
