An Excellent Supplement of Self Help
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I enthusiastically agree with previous comments that this clear and useful book is a truly excellent supplement for self-help for mild depression and anxiety-worry. “Supplement” might mean as additional help (homework) while being treated by a psychiatrist or psychotherapist for more serious depression. Or, more commonly, this short and practical book makes a useful supplement as part of a longer, more thorough exploration of self-help resources for depression, anxiety, and worry — perhaps longer books such as Feeling Good, or The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, or Undoing Depression, etc.. In my opinion, both short books and longer books have their places in the journey of self-understanding, self-help, and better living. Self-Coaching: How to Heal Anxiety and Depression by Joseph J. Luciani is one of the best short, practical supplements in print.
Helped Me Talk to my insecure child
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Before I bought Dr. Luciani’s book. I was suffering from anxiety and depression which I still am. He help me understand what was going on and how to give myself self-talks and how to talk to the insecure child inside of me. The self quizs that he has in his book helped me out too. Now, I understand myself and where my depression stands now and now I have to learn to over come my OCD and PTSD. The book is great to read and makes you understand what’s happening with your depression and anxiety too.

100% HEALING GENIOUS ! ! ! !
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Before this book, self-help books were lucky if I made it to the third chapter. But after reading “Self-Coaching” i’m astonished at the power this book has had on my severe depression and anxiety. From page one, the book will grab you, and support you through the last page of the book… I used it to beat depression and anxiety by applying the strategies, and I also used it to calm me down during “panic episodes”… His words soothe the soul and each time you turn the page you’ll expect your name to be mentioned - NOW THAT’s A BOOK
I find myself going back to chapters just because they leave me feeling so good. I wish everyone in my life would take the time to read this… This book has been my only effective weapon against depression and anxiety… I am very greatful for it.
Very Helpful

A Small Investment for a Life time Support Reference

I would describe this book as a lifetime support reference. It is well written for someone who wants to pick it up every so often and “get a lift” on how to cope when life throws you a curve.
Thank you Dr. Luciani !!

Thank you Dr. Luciani….you have removed any doubt I once felt about the effectiveness of “self-help” books. After following a friend’s recommendation, I purchased your book, SELF-COACHING: THE POWERFUL PROGRAM TO BEAT ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. To my immense relief, your program provided the answers and insights into feelings that I thought could never be overcome. I highly recommend this excellent book!!
Helps w/ the issues (and much more)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It’s been about 3-4 years since I read this book. I was in a dark period after a family tragedy. I’m a very well adjusted and happy adult and this book is a big part of it.
Revolutionary? No. It’s just a simple way to re-engineer self-image. What Dr. Joe advocates is 1. disrupt the negative self-talk (all depression patients know about the neg. self talk). 2. replace the negative “ST” with positive “ST.” 3. practice this habit over and over until it becomes routine (perhaps the most challenging part). 4. After doing this exercise for about 6-12 months, suddenly you discover that this activity becomes habit, and you then pleasantly discover that your self image is constantly positive and you feel much-much better.
Then, you start to apply this technique to other parts of your life, and, if you’re like me, you realize that all that stuff the dali lama preaches is real: you really do have control over your life!
This book requires steady work-hard work which, if practiced, becomes easy with time. Hang in there folks! Stick to the plan and you will find your way out of the dark hole!
Who else do I recommend? Check out Tal Ben-Shahar’s books. He’s another positive psychologist. Good stuff.

Mr Luciani’s work is so clear, so insightful that I need not carry those unnecessary burdens that have haunted me!
Habits can be broken
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The most profound thing I’ve learned through Dr. Luciani’s book is that depression and anxiety are merely habits. They are simply ways of thinking negatively. Ultimately, these habits are driven by insecurity and can eventually be broken.
I have just finished this book, and feel quite enlightened. It took me a little over a week to complete it because I had to constantly put it down in order to think. I found that I related to many of the stories presented in each chapter, and am actually curious to learn more about myself. If nothing else, this book will give you eye-opening moments and allow you to believe that you can overcome your depression and anxiety with strength that you already possess.
I’ve Become My Own Coach!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Self-Coaching is a wonderful book with clear, succinct guidance for anyone who, like myself, is affected by anxiety and depression. Dr. Luciani incorporates his own experiences that allow you to relate to how his methods are used and how they actually work. Self-Coaching has been exactly the motivation that I have been searching for! Finally, a book that I could not only comprehend, (no dictionary needed!) but have been able to implement to take charge of my own life, something that I have struggled with for years. If you are ready to change the way you “deal” with life, this is the book that will make the difference.
Balanced, self reliant approach to mental healing
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Dr. Luciani places the responsibility for curing mental health with its sufferers. What could be more affirming to those people than knowing that they have power over their illness? The book is outside the trend to diminishing self reliance, and it offers a calm and encouraging alternative to the culture of medication.
Self Coaching helped my personality and life in every way

This book can help even if you don’t have anxiety or depression.
A Wonderful gift

I have given Self-Coaching to my adult children, my friends and my colleagues. Dr. Luciani has a unique way of getting to the heart of anxiety and depression and then offering successful methods of dealing with these problems. This is a book to read over and over throughout one’s life. Thank you, Dr. Luciani.
Self-Coaching: How to Heal Anxiety and Depression
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently became interested in coaching as a career change (or addition) and found your books on depression, anxiety and Self-Coaching. I can honestly say from my heart, as a therapist, that you resonate with my ideas that traditional therapy leaves much to be desired and that there is a “missing link”. That link is self-empowerment. I cannot tell you how many people I’ve come across that have been in therapy for years only to be in the same place emotionally and functionally. Your practices are right on target and I’m beginning to integrate the concepts with myself and with the clients I see. THANK YOU for revolutioninzing the therapeutic community….long time needed. Your books are highly recommended, down to earth and extremely useful!
Self-Coaching method helped us

Great For Anyone
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this for someone who has anxiety and depression but unfortunately this person refuses to read it. So I did. I was amazed at how much I learned about how and why I react to situations and how not get so upset. I really enjoyed reading this and I could apply the reactions in the book to people i know as well as to myself. Now when they get upset and take things out I me, I don’t take it as personal unless it is my fault. I then change my reaction for the better. My daughter asked if she could read it so I just sent it to her. It is basically what the title implies “SELF COACHING” but it can be for ANYONE. I just might be able to help the person who won’t read it.
A “pick-me-up” reference book to cope with Life
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I keep this book handy because I use it as a pick-me-up tool to cope with life’s disappointments i.e. job stress; relationships gone sour. When I read it, the author writes so personal and “up close” that it seems he wrote the book “for me”.
When I finish a chapter, I feel added strength like this book is a tool to help me cope with life’s ups and downs.
Self Self Coaching: A life altering experience
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Dr. Luciani’s groundbreaking approach of ’self talk’ in his new book Self Coaching, has literally changed my daily life. Being insecure and moderately depressed–as I believe many of us secretly are–I had been tirelessly grasping for something to center my life and bring me back to normalcy. From the first page of the introduction I identified with Dr. Luciani, and began to understand the methods that would eventually liberate me from my anxieties. If you find yourself seeking for a sure-fire means of living the productive happy life you always dreamed of, but could never actually attain, Self Coaching is a must read. As an ancient Zen proverb says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” For me, the first step towards liberation and bliss is the direct result of Dr. Luciani’s book. I have tried numerous other self-help type books, yet none were able to speak to me on a personal level and guide me through the processes of transformation such as this book. Self Coaching is sure to change the face of personal betterment in years to come.
Great addition to an excellent series of books

This book as well as Dr. Luciani’s others have been great resources for me to understand my thoughts and get my anxiety and depression under control. It incorporates and elaborates on the other material from the previous books, as well as adding even more. Great book.

Great ideas for someone with general anxiety.
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I have social phobia and I’ve been on a hunt for the past few years for a natural treatment. I’ve tried herbs and supplements and nothing has worked. The last straw came when the supposed miracle supplement for anxiety-sufferers (magnesium) did nothing for me. Having read this book once before and not thinking anything of it, I decided I had no choice so I reread the book. I’ve learned that although the ideas in this book are great aids, they just won’t work for someone in my position.
Self-coaching is simple. You’ve lived for years with negative thoughts that cause your anxiety. All you have to do is change them. First, you must seperate your thoughts into fact or fiction. Most often, you’ll find that your anxious thoughts are silly. Then you must change your thoughts into something positive. This will change your mood completely. People with anxiety problems live in their mind rather than living in the moment. They process and think and process and think until their anxiety becomes hellish.
Self-coaching will and does work. Some may find it hard to believe but if you truly think about it, your anxiety is all in your mind. If you’re having an anxious thought and you put on some music and sing along, you eventually lose that anxious thought because you’re living in the moment. People with general anxiety will find the ideas in this book to be helpful.
Unfortunately, for someone like me who gets anxious “in the moment”, self-coaching will not work. I get extremely anxious around other people. Whereas self-coaching may help when you’re walking through a busy mall or anticipating a public speech, it doesn’t work when, say, someone comes up to you and begins talking to you. Self-coaching does help when you’re anticipating something anxious but it certainly doesn’t work when something anxiety-worthy comes out of the blue.
I will use self-coaching in addition to medication. I do think this book is well written, motivating, and easy to understand but, unfortunately, it won’t work for everyone.
A Easy Solution To A Complicated Problem!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I applaud Dr. Luciani and his simple, no nonsense, common sense aproach to combating anxiety. I had to take a medical leave from work because my daily bouts with worry had gotten the better of me. “Self Coaching” helped me get back to work and on with my life by teaching me how to drastically reduce the amount of unnecesssary anxiety that I struggled with for so long.
I suggested this book to a friend who was having similar problems. I’m happy to report that he is now on the path to an anxiety free life. He thanked me up and down for my suggestion.
At first glance I didn’t think a method so basic could be effective with a problem that was so overwhelming. Now, after reading and practicing “Self Coaching” I can’t understand why I thought a cure for anxiety had to be so complicated !
Thank you Dr. Luciani.
Self-Coaching - Practical and Effective
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I read this book trying to understand some of the reasons I have so much fear in certain situations and, hopefully to overcome it. Did it work? Well, yes and no.
I read something profound in this book that told me I was the producer of anxiety. That it wasn’t an illness that came and attacked me as a virus does, but that I generate it with my thoughts, which in turns produces imbalanced chemistry within my system. This clicked with me on so many levels and just knowing that helped me. It gave me encouragement.
There were some other really great insights in this book also. It’s very well written and gives the reader a lot of hope that better days will come if you try hard enough. And I believe Dr. Luciani when he says it.
However, I am uncertain that there is a true “heart” to this book. If I had to summarize the main point of this book it would be this: You have the power to talk yourself and motivate yourself out of anxiety with the right thought patterns. Is the advice deep enough for a real meaningful change? I think it has the potential to be. Automatic negative thoughts are a huge problem for those of insecurity an low self-confidence, so the advice really is effective here.
Is this book helpful to those who are struggling with anxiety and depression? I would say emphatically “yes” and you should really read it. There is only good to be gotten from it. Will it be the ultimate solution to abolishing your severe anxiety/depression? I doubt it. But it could a great stepping stone to doing so.
I would give this book three and a half stars if I could - but since it only lets me use whole stars, I will tip the scale over to four. My summation of the book is this: It really is a worthwhile read with some effective advice.
Wonderful Book

My best friend has been very depressed for a long time. I saw this book one night at the mall and picked it up for her. I had completely forgotten about it, when last night she called to thank me (and Self-Coaching) for changing her life. Just wanted to let people know how powerful this book is
Dr. Joseph Luciani does it again with Self-Coaching!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
With an amazing combination of style and psychological insight, Dr. Luciani has written what will soon be seen as the next breakthrough in bibliotherapy and self-help. Using over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Luciani explains how to overcome depression and anxiety by confronting the irrational insecurity at the foundation of these disorders. He uses numerous case descriptions to illustrate the self-coaching technique, which makes the book easy to follow and the techniques easy to apply. In addition to looking at depression and anxiety, several maladaptive personality styles are examined in a self-coaching framework to treat a wide range of psychopathlogical behavior. There is no doubt that all readers can benefit from the revolutionary and powerful therapeutic tools that make up Self-Coaching.

When I received a copy of Dr. Luciani’s Self-Coaching I couldn’t put it down. After all these years I’ve finally got answers to why my life has been such a struggle. What’s really amazing is just how simple the solution is. If only I had had this book three therapists ago!
Relief

Self-Coaching has had a profound effect on my life both personally and professionally. I have suffered from anxiety for many years, trying desperately to find a technique or method to help alleviate my solicitude. Nothing has worked like Dr. Luciani’s book! His straight forward, basic, step by step approach allowed me to understand that my anxiety disorder is something that I can control, reduce, and eliminate. In fact, I was so moved by the transformation in my life that I am persuing an MSW degree so that I may help bring to others the relief that I have finally found.
Look No Further than to Dr. Luciani.

Thank you Dr. Luciani for your insightful book. I’ve been struggling with Anxiety and Panic since I was 8. I’m now 41. Of all of the books I’ve read and all of the doctors I’ve seen, your “theory” is the one I KNOW to be the truth! You have laid out the roadmap from A to Z. I feel like buying an extra copy and putting it in a safe place just in case if something happens to this one! Thank you for your wisdom and understanding. It’s invaluable!
The Best Self-Help Book For Beating Anxiety & Depression
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Not only is this book brilliant - it works. It is a no nonsense approach that explains what causes anxiety and depression, and what you can do about them. The book takes the proverbial bull by the proverbial horns.
Dr. Luciani is the master authority on “Self-Coaching” and “Self-Talk.”
There is no ambiguity here. He teaches you exactly what you need to know and do. This is a very organized and powerful program that will enable you to finally take charge of your emotions and your life. A must read for anyone struggling with anxiety or depression.
Life gem
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Self-Coaching is an absolute gem. Rarely is there a “life guide” suitable for all - those struggling with very real difficulties and those who are not struggling but who desire to simply make their life - and the lives of those around them - simply better. After reading this guide, and you will want to read it more than once, I am sure other readers will feel a positive “connection” with Dr. Joe, and more importantly, with themselves.
A terrific guide for your first steps!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this book on the recommendation of a friend, and as a ‘compantion of sorts to ‘Undoing Depression.’ This was one of those rare self-help books that genuinely seems to be centered on that premise.
Luciani give a brilliant background to what you can get from self-helping, and explains it in a way that doesn’t make you feel 1.) hopelessly inacapable of accomplishing relief from depression, 2.) explains the causes in a way that don’t make you feel like a failure for developing the thought patterns in the first place, and 3.) doesn’t use a lot of psychobabble, (save the exception of the inner child thing, which is just a personal irritant of mine) so you actually can see where he’s tryig to get you to go.
I really liked his approach to focusing your recovery more internally and on reminding you that it’s not an overnight process. Another appreciation I found was that he recongized how difficult changing these patterns can be…and so you expect those hurdles, rather than get discouraged yet again.
I found this to be an excellent book for anyone suffering mild to moderate depression. (And I recommend buying this as a companion to ‘Undoing Depression,’ so you really get a good sense of what you are working with) If you are severely depressed, you should probably work through more of it before tackling self-coaching.
everyday practical help - self coaching
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Suffering from severe depression is immobilizing, and only you can tell what you really need. The important thing is to get help and address it - just hoping for it to get better is a dangerous game. For me the thinking with this book was that it wouldn’t hurt to try. I find the book’s emphasis on the present versus what happened long ago helpful, but others may want to work through some old things. It has a definite focus on now, getting through the day, and living through some rough and debilitating emotional strongholds. Personally I prefer the down to earth and occasionally in your face tone to some of the “softer” depression books I’ve read. Having very practical and well-outlined tools to confront my depression/anxiety has been beneficial to me - and I also like the way the author reframes emotion based on context (anger, wanting to control, etc) to help the reader understand the roots of the negative feelings. Overall, really great book - main improvement would be having spiritual and Biblical helps as well.
Dr. Joe Luciani has written another winner
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have worked with Dr. Luciani as his editor for ten years, and the experience has been highly rewarding for me. During that time, his writing has steadily become highly polished and skilled. But most important for me, I have benefited personally from the books he has published. It is a gift to work with a writer whose subject matter is so important for so many people. Although I am not depressed, I do have occasional anxious moments–who doesn’t, living in today’s world?–and Self-Coaching has been a wonderful tool to handle them.
This book offers a straight-forward, proven, and pragmatic tool for anyone suffering from anxiety or depression. Highly recommended.
Your kidding, right?
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Who is this guy kidding? The “advice” contained in this meaningless tome is about as useful as an anchor to a drowning man. His touchy-feely approach to mental illness shows he has not experienced the living hell himself. He should stick to giving advice to pre-schoolers and leave the psychological work to those better qualified, if not better experienced, in these matters.
Broken Record.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
this book is pretty much all filler. the “Dr” that wrote it seems to like to repeat things over and over. the techniques are garbage… period. the book is basically about talking to yourself repeatedly till you forget your problems. what is that? the book should be called “Sweep your problems under a rug”. got news for ya folks… life sucks sometimes and the last thing ya wanna do is dismiss problems. you gotta face them head on and just deal with the pain… it WILL pass, and if you cant and you become suicidal… books are not going to help, real doctors will.

Very Good

I realized after reading this book how much power our thoughts have over our feelings. It is not easy but we do have the ability to change our negative thought patterns, and by doing that we can help to relieve anxiety and depression.
affirmations
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This book may be good for those who have not at least already tried using positive affirmations in their life, but other than that, that is basically what most of this book stresses, other than categorizing you into a certain type of animal such as a hedgehog or a turtle, etc. Some case histories and positive affirmations, but much more would be needed for someone with true anxiety and depression.
A wonderful book!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this book for my husband and decided to read it myself. I was very impressed with Dr. Luciani’s techniques. My husband and I look forward to using them together!
You won’t believe how this book will change your life.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I’ve just finished reading Dr. Luciani’s book and after reading a recent Amazon review suggesting that Self-Coaching is essentially a book about positive affirmations, felt the need to respond. No one who has actually read this book can walk away feeling it is JUST about positive affirmations. That would not be possible. This is a powerful book of substance, simplicity, and profound depth. As Dr. Luciani says, positive thinking and affirmations are only half the solution, the other half is positively believing. He goes on to say that positive affirmations are important, but not nearly as important as getting to a point of believing what you tell yourself. And that’s exactly what his technique of Self-Talk teaches you. It’s not that hard, not once you realize that anxiety and depression are merely habits, habits that can be broken. I’ve personally tried many “positive thinking” approaches and can say without reservation that this book goes the distance where others just promise. It did for me!
A simple but profound idea
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I found this book charming and well-conceived. Coaching oneself out of mild depression or anxiety is a great idea! Why rely on someone else to do it for you when you can do it yourself? It’s a simple but profound idea. I don’t think this approach will work for moderate to severe depression or anxiety, but it may supplement other treatments in those cases. This book cheered me up! Avery Z. Conner, author of “Fevers of the Mind”.
Feel free and relived
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
If (like me) you have been looking for books on self-help, because you need something to wake you up or calm you down… I think you will get a lot of help from this book.
It doesn’t tell you about Karma or ways of life, or the stars, the forces of nature or how to shape you to conquer more.
It does 3 things I was looking for a long time - it identifies the problem, relates with it (tells you things that will remind you of your own situations) and then gives a slap on your bottom and tells you how to get going.
I have been looking for a long time for such a book.
At least, you should give it a chance if you are feeling depressed or anxious for some time now… you will feel relifed and liberated. And it’s just so simple…
Some good advice, not sensitive.
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
This is the first Amazon review I have been inspired to write. While some of the exercises in this book are helpful, and the author’s general idea is fairly accurate and well-intended, the lump sum of this book, I do not feel, is something that will resonate particularly well for an actually depressed person.
The idea the depression is “self-generated” is a loaded statement from the beginning, since depressives are so inclined to blame themselves from the get-go. That isn’t to say that negative thinking patterns don’t perpetuate depression, because they do. But I very strongly feel this book grossly oversimplifies, and completely glosses over the nuances and sensitivities of the actual REAL LIFE people who might be reading this book.
An obvious road-block is that depressed people are probably too tired to get up and “coach” themselves — AKA, get up and yell at themselves to “get motivated”, as the author suggests. The last thing people with depression should here is “just get it together” or “just get up and do it.” Yes, getting better takes work, but I don’t think this book is the greatest place to start.
Another alarm bell is the fact that the book is praised on the back cover by Dr. Laura Schlessinger, a crazy right-wing “therapist” with a terrible and generally insensitive talk-show.
Also, at some point in this book all the labels he makes up for specific personality types get so irritating and over-the-top, I felt like I couldn’t keep track of what he was even talking about. Also, indentifying the depressive or anxiety-ridden character as the “insecure child” I feel also pushes in the direction of self-blame — as if it is somehow our own fault for not growing out of our insecurities. He’s right to identify depression and anxiety as something outside the natural self, but he’s sort of missing the mark. Again, oversimplification, and insensitivity.
The book I would recommend as an alternative, both brilliant, practical, and sensitive, is “Undoing Depression” by Richard O’Connor. Thanks.
Simply an amazing piece of literature
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Anyone who reads this book will be able to do more than they ever imagined possible. This is an amazing piece of literature that has not only been an inspiration, but also a valuable educational tool. Since seeing the movie K-Pax with Kevin Spacey, I have often wondered about the possibility that all animals are capable of self-therapy for many types of mental illnesses. Our brains are an incredibly powerful tool that many proclaim are only being used at 10% capacity, yet Dr. Luciani ensures that anyone who reads his book can learn to dramatically increase this statistic. His advice is adequate for all ages and all educational levels. Being a fellow doctor, I find that this exceptionally high quality of work is rare in the industry today.
This Book Works!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am the freelance editor who worked on Dr. Joseph Luciani’s book from its earliest inception to the final manuscript that was submitted to the publisher. It’s unusual for a manuscript that I’m editing also to have such a profound effect on my life. Not only did I very much enjoy working with Joe, I learned a tremendous amount about myself in the process. I could identify the ineffective and destructive personality traits of people I know, and my own as well. Self-coaching taught me how to fix the things that needed fixing and accept the things I couldn’t change.
I highly recommend this clear and straightforward book to everyone, not just those who suffer from anxiety and depression.
Filled with wisdom.
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I found this book to be filled with wisdom and strategies to help achieve and maintain a healthy life. This is a book I refer back to. It helps to keep me focused on my positive self. Thank you Dr. Luciani for writing this book which makes beating anxiety and depression very manageable.
Fantastic! Not just for anxiety and depression!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is fantastic, not just for anxiety and depression, but for issues of self-esteem, shyness, excessive introversion, anger, perfectionism, etc. I am exploring all these things in therapy and with medication, but felt that there was something more, some common thread, common cause…and the author has found it.
This book really helps you get to the root problem that all these have in common. Deep-seated insecurity and lack of trust in oneself to handle what life throws at you. Hard to admit, but it is the beginning of healing. The author shows how this insecurity (what he calls the Insecure Child), tries to maintain control of oneself and the outside world through immature coping strategies learned in, and repeated since childhood.
If you are a self-help junkie like me who has read countless books, but the result has only been “understanding” your issues better, but never overcoming them, I urge you to give these techniques a try.
At first read, they seem too simplistic, to simple, but in simple things there is power. Give it a try! What have you got to lose, except the misery you’re living in?
This book saved my life!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased Dr. Luciani’s book a month ago and found it simple and to the point. For many years I’ve been over-thinking my severe anxiety and panic problems. I just assumed the answer had to be more complex, more complicated. Self-Coaching taught me otherwise! I’ve been reading self-help for the past decade and consider myself somewhat of an authority on the subject. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting this book to be the answer, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding.
Forget what you think about anxiety and expensive remedies (threapy and the many tapes on anxiety I’ve accumulated included), buy this book and find out the simple truth about how to start feeling better. In just weeks, Dr. Luciani’s technique of Self-talk taught me how to break my anxiety habit. I wish I could tell the world how well this program really, truly works!
A remarkable self-help book
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am not sure of how I came across this book, though I think it was an Amazon recommendation. It is indeed fascinating and I think a worthwhile read for anyone. It is premised upon the author’s contention that “. . . anxiety and depression are merely habits–and all habits can be broken”. In fact, Joseph J. Luciani’s suggestions and program could be effectively applied to any life situation from anxiety and depression to improving your golf swing.
While Luciani’s approach, at first blush, seems to have a lot in common with Albert Ellis’s “cognitive therapy”, it is significiantly different. Luciani is really much more oriented toward self-delivered life coaching through what he dubs “self-talk”.
On its face, the approach is logical and, in fact, what most of us do normally when we feel in control of the situation. Luciani’s point is that it is in those situations where we don’t feel in control that self-talk is most important - and, frankly, he seems to have a point.
Luciani is certainly devoted to what he believes. He maintains a web site in support of the book where he freely dispenses advice (with appropriate disclaimers), but without trying to sell anything. Quite a guy and a very different approach to self-promotion.
Depressed, anxious or not, this is a very interesting book and worthy of your attention.

A Wonderful Book With Great Construction!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
It goes back to Dr. David Burns. Dr. Aaron Beck. Dr. Albert Ellis. Dr. Abraham Low (who is the real originator of rational therapy and cognitve therapy). It’s just that Joseph J. Luciani constructs it so well. He explains that depression is a depletion of energy. Anxiety is an increase of energy. Who cares if he is wrong about everything! It works. He markets this brillantly.
I have seen his website. He provides a great number of techniques to help us be kind to ourselves. If you beat yourself up regularly like I do, buy the book. Thank you.
Stop worrying without the guilt!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. How could I not feel depressed, anxious and worried? I knew that my worry and anxiety was becoming a habit. I found that I actually felt guilty if I was not worrying! I was afraid that by not worrying, it was an indication that I didn’t care what happened to my daughter. I found that I was caught up in a spiral of ongoing negativity. I was becoming the victim of my own thinking. Self-Coaching taught me the difference between circumstance-driven anxiety (that which is unavoidable) and insecurity-driven (that which is avoidable). When I began to address the other areas in my life (my insecurities) I was able to stop adding needless anxiety and rumination to my burden. Self-Coaching has given me the confidence, I need, to handle my insecurities, fears and anxieties. Dr. Luciani’s book has truly been a God-send to me!
Self-Coaching stands above the rest!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Having read many, self help books, I felt Self-Coaching stood above the rest! Although I could write pages on the benefits of this book, I will try to keep this short. I often find that it is difficult for those that have not had to deal with depression to understand or relate to what we go through, and the books out there tend to be very clinical. However, Self-Coaching gave me a new prospective on the self-help book. Dr. Luciani’s methods of “coaching” have allowed me to begin taking control of my illness and my life. After years of therapists and medications that I never really thought would benefit, I truly feel I can do this! I will not be letting this book go, I have already gone back and reread several sections for motivation. I would recommend Self-Coaching to anyone, no matter how mild or severe your anxiety or depression is, it can change your life.

Changed My Life
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Dr. Luciani’s insightful and easy to understand style has changed my life. The user friendly format helps one understand the symptoms of anxiety and depression and gives the reader the tools neccesary to effectively deal with those destructive processes. The book is a masterpiece!
My life is never the same
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I suffered from Generalized Anxiety Disorder (”the worry disease”) with underlying depression which fuels the worry because i was convinced that I couldn’t handle life if something bad happened. Everyone has an internal dialogue going on in their head all day long and the reason why people are anxious or depressed is they have thoughts about something scary or sad all day long. This book shows what fuels those thoughts (insecurity and eroded self-trust) and how to change your child-reflex (how you react to situations that make you anxious and depressed) and this isn’t written by someone who just got out of college. Dr. Luciani has had years of experience and knows what he is talking about. And if you don’t understand something he is more than happy to answer your questions personally in his “Ask Dr. Joe” forum on his website http://www.self-coaching.net
Anxiety…Panic Attacks…Depression? Read on!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After my uncle, with whom I was very close, took his own life about 3 months ago, my life become almost unbearable. Anxiety, panic attacks, depression, re-occuring thoughts of very bad things, driving my wife crazy, you name it.
Started to see a shrink, and use SSRI’s. It was helping but not going the distance. This book helped bridge the gap. Not only did it help me understand what was happening, but also how to get past the underlying issues and deal with the symptoms. My shrink thought it was a good idea, too…PhD in psychology, not MD.
My advice: Do exactly as he suggests. Get a journal, document, name your Inner Child (you’ll see) etc… It was odd and a bit scarey at first. I can not stress it enough. If you’re going through the same terrifying BS I encountered, this is a must read!
Self Coaching: Bringing therapy home
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As a college student, stress and anxiety are everpresent and overwhelming. Joseph Luciani’s new book SElF COACHING fills a much needed niche in the self-help library of every person, whether depressed, anxious, or healthy. I don’t want to go to a psychologist right now. I don’t the time or the gumption to take that step. This book has provided me with the tools to overcome problems that I may not take to a psychologist. To a certain degree, everyone suffers from anxiety and depression. Every person should own this book because it brings the professional practice of psychotherapy into personal and daily practice. If you every felt anxious or depressed or alone, this book is for you.
Too Simplistic To Use As Strong Cognitive Based Tool…
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Ok I have purchased at least 25 books on Anxiety & Panic Attacks. This book really caught my attention with all the positive reviews, but when I saw the low price I became a little skeptical and this book falls into the cliche (You get what you pay for). The author takes his 7 steps, and tells you to memorize and apply them when you feel anxious and or depressed. Unfortunately for many people it doesn’t work for them, and if it does then you probably are not that bad off to begin with.
If you are really looking to get better, and are looking for other options besides the meds then you need solid and proven tools. If you have the money and little time pick up Lucinda Bassette’s Attacking Anxiety/Depression 16 tape and workbook program. If you have time and little money join a non for profit support group in your area. I gave the author two stars just because we need more literature on the disorder, and the biggest thing you can tell yourself if you suffer from anxiety like me is that its a disorder and not an illness. Take care…
Giving you the power and self confidence to heal yourself
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Luciani takes a common-sense, user-friendly approach to, what he terms, “breaking a bad habit” of insecurity and negativity that cause anxiety and depression. His book is empowering in that it not only allows one to examine exactly what causes anxiety and depression, but provides concrete exercises and “self-talk” to help in the most anxious moments. Reading the book is like having unlimited access to a private therapist who gently guides you through the anxiety and onward to positivity and self-confidence. A must-read for anyone experiencing anxiety.
Gaining confidence
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Having spent thousands of dollars on therapy and still feeling lousy I turned to self help books in search of the answer. In Dr. Luciani’s book I found it. It was written in words I could easily relate to and understand. It was almost like being on the corner with the guys having a bull session. Dr. Luciani seemed as though he were in the room with me when I read his book. He has given me the confidence in myself to cure my own problems instead of looking to someone else. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Time in!

This book is the most motivational tool for motivation in my playbook. Just yesterday, in fact, I screamed at myself that I’m a “f**kin’ p*ssy,” then dropped and gave myself 50.
Changed what I had believed
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I always thought feelings come first, then thoughts. After reading this book, I learned that thoughts come before feelings. Past insecurity along with habit continues the negative, untrue thinking process. Understanding this, you can change how you think, which affects how you feel. There are questions in the book to find out your personality type. This book is similar to the “Feeling Good” by David Burns, philosophy, but worth reading.
This book is awful.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I did not like this book at all. I thought it was very negative in its attitude towards people who are depressed. It seemed to make light of the subject and act like if you just think positively everything will be great. If you just need to improve your self-esteem a little bit, this might help. However, if you are trying to recover from any kind of significant battle with depression or anxiety, I recommend Undoing Depression by Richard O’Connor.
LOGICAL and Basic! Very helpful!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book is for anyone tired of feeling like a victim of their own thoughts. After reading this book I was able to immediately incorporate his techniques successfully. For example, I had a class that always makes gives me anxiety so when I was in class and feeling awful, I looked at the clock and said to myself, “2 more hours. I can handle anything for 2 hours.” After that I was fine! It’s not just about telling yourself positive things that may be untrue or simply unhelpful, it’s about separating fact from fiction. It was true I hated the class, but it was also true that I could handle it for 2 hours. Once you separate fact from fiction you begin to see how your self doubt doesn’t need to have the upper hand. You can choose to stop feeling insecure and start LIVING. Negative thoughts stop us from action and freedom from these thought allows us to LIVE. I also recommend the book Dancing with Fear by Foxman, very good and very helpful, but if you want something more pragmatic - buy Luciani’s book.
very helpful

I have read many books on anxiety and depression. Self Coaching was the first one that really made sense to me. It is written in such a way that you can begin to unravel the path of anxiety, and see insights that you have never seen before. Dr. Luciani shares his own experience with anxiety and depression, and then goes on to explain why so many of us get caught up in the anxiety web. And most importantly, he shows us how to unravel it and be rid of extreme anxiety for good. This is an excellent book, I highly recommend it.

To be honest this wasn’t a book that I could get into. I returned it after scanning it.
An NOVEL new way of coaching yourself on anxiety!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I was struggling with anxiety and depression because of the recent events that have been such a shock to all of us, and let me tell you, this book has almost, if not entirely, given me a completely new outlook and cure for my anxiety attacks. Dr. Luciani has developed a completely new angle to tackle your inner turmoils and struggles in an easy way. Even if you are not troubled by these mental issues, this is a great book to ensure that you are not insecure and strengthen trust in yourself.

This book has indeed changed and enhanced my life !! I remember one day feeling particularly axcious and I read a highlighted section that I had bookmarked and found myself in a more relaxed frame of mind.
I find Dr Joe’s philosophy on coaching and self talk the BEST approach to dealing with “Life’s Baggage” and finally learning how to unpack !!!
Great book!

I haven’t finished this book yet but it is basic enough to incorporate into your life to help you get through your depression and anxiety.
I have been depressed since the age of 19 and I’m now 36 so I am excited to see how much it can help me in the long run.
WOW!!! Finally…a true SELF help book!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
About five years ago I purchased a self-help book in hopes of solving some of the anxiety/phobia problems that had been restricting my life. This book not only jaded my view of self-help books in general, but also furthered my anguish. As a result of this book, I have severely doubted that self-help books could actually prove fruitful…and if you know me, you know that I am extremely stubborn when it comes to such matters. HOWEVER, following a collegue’s recommendation, I glanced over Dr. Luciani’s book in the local bookstore. I couldn’t put it down! It spoke to me! And more importantly it taught me the most important lesson of my life: How to talk to, and really know my true self. This is a universal struggle that is seemingly a quixotic venture…but trust me, “Self Coaching” works, and works immediately! If you want to go back to living life, instead of watching it fly past you. . .first stop: “Self Coaching”, Dr. Luciani. Enough said.
Changed my life and will change yours too!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This book will change your life. I can’t describe in words what this book means to me. After suffering from anxiety and depression for almost 5 years now, reading this book has made me feel like a new person. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to beat their anxiety and depression too.
A Deeply Humbling Experience
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
As someone who has suffered from chronic anxiety, depression, and OCD for the past 10 years, all I can say is that Dr. Luciani’s book has changed my life. I have seen multiple psychologists, psychiatrists, and other doctors (and taken different medications), and nothing has had the profound effect of this book. I have also shared this book with friends who have similar sufferings and just reading certain passages to them has profoundly changed their lives. With a one time psychiatry session costing $175 an hour, and medication and what not over time costing thousands you deserve to spend under 20 bucks for this. To be honest I would trade in all the other support vehicles (doctors, therpists, medication) I’ve dealt with the past 10 years for this book. It’s that profound, and entirely on the mark. I can’t say enough good things about it. Don’t wait to start healing. By the way I buy tons of books from Amazon and this is the first one I’ve done a review for — I think it’s so important to share this book.
